How To Make A Wooden Cup With A Lid

Picture of How To Make A Wooden Cup With A Lid
For this you will need six 11" long 1x6s and a wood lathe
Remember to vote for this in the contests if you liked it and look at my other contest entries and vote for them too if you enjoyed them

Step 1: A Bit Sticky

Picture of A Bit Sticky
Start by gluing the six boards together like in the picture above when you are done cut a bit off of each side to ensure they are even

Step 2: Getting It Set

Picture of Getting It Set
When the glue is dry draw an x from corner to corner and screw in the centred on the x jig to screw to the chuck of the lathe

Step 3: Starting It Off

Picture of Starting It Off
Put it on the lathe and start carving in your design, it can be just a simple straight up and down cup or an intercut design

Step 4: Carving It Out

Picture of Carving It Out
When you have got the outside the way you want it you can start carving out the inside like the picture above

Step 5: When You're Done

Picture of When You're Done
When you have crafted a masterpiece you are ready to cut it off. You can sand it on the lathe on the fastest speed and then you can cut it off. You can do it by hand or a band saw but the most precise way to do it is on the lathe with the tool I was using in the picture if you do it on the lathe only cut it till there is 0.5" in diameter there then finish it off with a hand saw and sand the bottom of it

Step 6: Style It The Way You Want

Picture of Style It The Way You Want
When it is cut off you can varnish it, paint it or just put some polycarbonate on it

Step 7: To The Top Of Things

Picture of To The Top Of Things
To make the lid use the left over wood you should only need like 1.5" but you should have plenty extra

Step 8: Starting The Lid

Picture of Starting The Lid
photo-2014-04-09, 7:48 PM.jpg

Start by carving the top of the lid near the chuck of the lathe, the design I am using is just a standard flat lid

Step 9: Making It Fit

Picture of Making It Fit
photo-2014-04-09, 7:48 PM.jpg
Once you have got the design of the lid done the way you want you can move down to the edge a bit and start making a straight line (do not design it) this will be the part that goes into the cup so it has to be a sudden edge so it doesn't fall through as in the picture above make sure to make it small enough to go in smoothly without pressure, but not too small so that it doesn't rattle.

Step 10: Smoothing It

Picture of Smoothing It
After you have engraved it to the point that it fits you can turn the lathe to the highest speed and start sanding it use very fine grit to get it extremely smooth.

Step 11: Cutting It Off

Picture of Cutting It Off
photo-2014-04-09, 7:49 PM.jpg
When it is smooth as you want it begin to cut it off just like you did with the cup (remember to only go until there is 0.5" in diameter left then cut it off with a saw.) When you have cut it off you will need to sand that part

Step 12: Varnishing

Picture of Varnishing
When it is cut off and smooth you can varnish it or just put a layer of polycarbonate on it.

Step 13: Your Done!

Put the lid on your cup with all the things you want to fill it with and enjoy!

How to Make a Disco Ball Bra

How to Make a Disco Ball Bra

Disco ball bras are worn by celebrities such as Lady Gaga, and they're often worn in clubs. Their popularity hasn't waned since the days of Madonna teaching us to wear our underwear as outer wear, so why not make a disco ball bra yourself? This is an easy, affordable and fun project to work on, with a great fashion outcome.

Steps

  1. Buy a comfortable but not too expensive bra. It doesn't really matter what color the bra is, but common colors such as white and black work best. When this is complete you won't see the cups, so don't worry too much about how fancy the bra looks.

    BuyBra Step 1.jpg

    • Make sure the bra has full coverage and is firm. Padded bras are a good choice.
    • You may be wearing this bra uncovered, so make sure the bra fits well and does not ride up or slip off the shoulders.
  2. Buy the supplies. You can purchase either silver sequins, mosaic mirror chips or silver glitter (a messier but still effective option). You will also need fabric glue. The sequins or glitter can be found in sewing, craft or even art stores along with the mosaic mirror chips. You can also purchase a shiny metallic fabric, but this is optional.

    • Sequins attached to a long thread are better than individual sequins - they're faster to attach.
    • If using glitter, the glitter should be in as large pieces as possible.
  3. Find a large and flat workspace to lay out your materials. Avoid using any place that will become too cluttered, as you need lots of room to move. You may want to lay out newspaper or a drop cloth under the bra to contain the mess.

    FindWorkspace Step 3.jpg

  4. Decorate the bra. Spread the fabric glue right across the cups of the bra. Depending on what you're using, here is what to do next:

    MakeBra Step 5.jpg

    • If you bought sequins, then glue them on in even rows; don't leave gaps but keep the sequins tightly packed together. Alternatively, sew each sequin onto the bra evenly by hand. If using strips of sequins, cut to size to fit each bra cup and hand sew or machine stitch in place.
    • If you bought the mosaic mirror chips, then just arrange them carefully on the bra and glue into place. Again, keep them closely together, without gaps.
    • If you bought glitter, place fabric glue over the bra, then just sprinkle it over the bra and set it out in a good place to dry.
      • This step is optional but effective if you're using glitter. If you bought metallic fabric as well as glitter, cut the fabric out to fit the shape of each bra cup (do a few basic measurements to make sure what you're cutting is accurate). Shape the fabric over the bra, glue in place (or stitch around if you're really patient) and wait for it to dry. Then, put fabric glue on top of the metallic fabric and sprinkle the glitter on this glue. The metallic fabric will help to bring out the sparkles of the glitter, making it appear shinier.
  5. Allow to dry. Before the disco ball bra dries, hold the bra out and check its shape. If any adjustments are needed, it's much easier to do before the glue dries, so fix any gaps or mistakes now.

    Optional Step 6 5.jpg

    • Check that the bra cups are fully covered with the sequins, mirror chips or glitter.
  6. Try on your new disco ball bra. Check it out in the mirror, then make any adjustments needed to ensure that it fits you comfortably. Once it fits well, it's time to wear it out to the next dance.

    TryOn Step 7.jpg

Tips

  • If you've used glitter, be aware that this will continue to drop over the rest of you and your clothing whenever you wear the outfit. This can be pretty as an effect for nightwear but it can also be a messy nuisance.
  • Great ways to wear are under a leather jacket or under a baggy, low neck vest so it peeps through. Or just wear by itself with high waist shorts or skirt.

Warnings

  • Do not wash the bra. Air it outdoors if it gets smoky or sweaty.

Things You'll Need

  • A bra (preferably padded)
  • Sequins, glitter or mosaic mirror chips
  • Fabric glue
  • Metallic fabric (optional)
  • Flat, large workspace

How to Make a Pencil Holder with Popsicle Sticks

How to Make a Pencil Holder with Popsicle Sticks

Popsicle sticks are useful for all sorts of things beyond holding an iced treat. They make an excellent pencil holder when neatly stacked together, as shown in this tutorial. When completed, you can paint it in any color you fancy, or decorate it with craft items.

Steps

Preparing the template

  1. Place one of the popsicle sticks on a sheet of paper. Measure its length. In this case, the stick measured 11cm/4.3".

    20131213_155832.jpg

  2. Construct an equilateral triangle based on the length of the popsicle stick.

    20131213_160142.jpg

Building the first triangle

  1. Place one of the popsicle sticks over any one side of the constructed triangle.

    20131213_160336.jpg

  2. Squirt a bit of glue on one end of the popsicle stick.

    20131213_160420.jpg

  3. Place another popsicle stick over another side of the constructed triangle. Stick the two popsicle sticks together.

    20131213_160529.jpg

  4. Squirt some glue over the other two ends of the popsicle sticks.

    20131213_160611.jpg

  5. Take another popsicle stick and place it over the last/third side of the constructed triangle. Stick the popsicle sticks together.

    20131213_160650.jpg

  6. Remove the sheet of paper. At this stage, you will have formed a popsicle triangle. From this sample, you will now build up the pencil holder.

Constructing the rest of the pencil holder

  1. Repeat the above steps to add a second layer of popsicle sticks to the structure.

    20131213_160913.jpg

  2. Continue the building process. Add more popsicle sticks until the tower has attained the average height of a pencil holder (you can decide how high to make it).
    20131213_161425 1.jpg

  3. Allow the structure to dry.

    20131213_163502.jpg

Adding a base

  1. Create a base for the pencil holder, to keep the pencils intact. Squirt some glue on any two sides of the constructed pencil holder. Glue popsicle sticks across one end, so as to make a base for the pencil holder.
    20131213_162402.jpg

  2. Let the base dry. Once it dries, cut-off any extra pieces. As shown in the image, this can be made easier by ruling a line first, and following that when cutting.

    20131213_162635.jpg

  3. Once it is cut, the base should look somewhat as shown in this image.

    20131213_163227.jpg

Finishing the holder

  1. Decorate the pencil holder as desired. Throw on a bit of paint and be creative! Paint an interesting pattern, a favorite animal or your name, for example. You could also add decorative elements such as costume gems, plastic toys, buttons, etc.

    20131213_164743 1.jpg

  2. Finished! Now you have a pencil holder made up of popsicle sticks.

    20131213_174337 1.jpg

Tips

  • Be creative. Add designs, decorate it with a ribbon, or do anything else to improve the look of the structure.
  • Give a pencil holder to your friends and loved ones, if you wish.

Warnings

  • Don't use very strong adhesives. They dry very quickly and can make it hard to fix errors or realign the sticks in time.

Things You'll Need

  • A sheet of paper
  • Scissors
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Glue
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Paint
  • Decorative items (optional)
